About Welshpool (Y Trallwng)

The town of Welshpool is near to Newtown in Powys and Oswestry in Shropshire. It came into existence as a borough in 1263.

Old Welshpool, known as "y Trallwm", was a part of the territories ruled by the Princes of Powys and came into being some thirteen centuries ago following the erection of a church by St. Llewelyn.

Welshpool lost its status as a borough under the Local Government Act 1972. At this point its power was transferred to Montgomeryshire District Council.

One of its main monuments is Powis Castle, a must for the many visitors who pass through during the summer months

Welshpool is also nearby the unique Beehouse Studios, highly sought after for its exclusive privacy and stunning location, which assists most artists to perform their best. The Beehouse Recording Studios has skilled producer engineers available and the ultimate in technical expertise and equipment.

The Splendour of Powys


Powys today incorporates Montgomeryshire, Radnorshire and Presteigne and covers the area formerly occupied by the Cornovii and other ancient Celtic tribes.

After the Romans came, these areas were ruled by Powys and Brycheiniog. The huge landscape still lies virtually unspoilt and open, scattered by small hamlets and single dwellings. The remains of hilltop fortresses, and Norman and medieval castles remain on the hilltops. A large number of museums bear testament to the wonderful historical legacy of this area.Exhibitions such as Celtica bring the audience actively into contact with the Welsh culture.

Lake Vyrnwy Sculpture Trail is the largest sculpture trail in Wales, and Lake Vyrnwy itself is a superb bird-watching area with much to do for young and old alike.

The Brecon Beacons also offer ample opportunities for eating al fresco.

The Powys region is crammed with historical monuments and living history combined with natural wonders which are both absorbing and enjoyable to visit. Time should be taken to get to know this huge county and its many surprises.
