About Telford

Thomas Telford was born in 1757 and died in 1834. A Scottish civil engineer, he transformed road building in England and Scotlandby introdicing the use of a base of large stones surfaced with compacted layers of small stones. His name was given to the modern town of Telford in Shropshire in recognition of his wonderful contribution to the transport systems of the region, including both roads and canals.
As Surveyor of Public Works for Shropshire, England, he renovated Shrewsbury's Castle, the town's prison the church of St Mary Magdalene in Bridgnorth and another at Madeley.

In 1790 he designed a bridge carrying the London-Holyhead road over the Severn river at Montford, In his time he was to build some40 bridges in Shropshire. The Buildwas bridge was influenced by the famous bridge at Ironbridge. he designed and constructed the Ellesmere Canal.
