CCTV, or Closed Circuit Television, is a camera based surveillance system designed to monitor properties, businesses and homes when the owner is not present.

Over the past ten years, the use of CCTV systemshas expanded into many areas of our lives, both domestic and professional. In Britain between 150 and 300 million pounds per annum is spent on providing surveillance. This takes the form of security cameras in town centres, housing estates, car parks and public facilities.

We are seeing increasing use of CCTV and linked systems of cameras at home and in leisure places, using a variety of techniques including full pan, tilt, zoom and infrared capacity, and home use is growing ever more popular. They are also used more and more frequently in phone booths, vending machines, buses, trains, taxis, alongside motorways and inside Automatic Teller (Cash) Machines as well as in petrol stations and other high risk manned facilities.

Video surveillance not only plays a part in protecting your home via a CCTV system from unknown intruders, it is also being used to substantiate accusations of domestic violence and abuse.

With the original idea of the prevention of burglary, CCTV is being used in a wide variety of places to combat 'anti-social behavior', including littering, urinating in public, traffic violations, obstruction, drunkenness, and evading meters in town car parks. When combined with observation of body language, the cameras are particularly effective in detecting people using marijuana and other substances. These systems are used increasingly to police public behaviour in general.
