The Uses of Security Cameras and how CCTV contributes to a more secure environment and better security systems History Security camera systems have been in use since 1942, when they were used for monitoring early rocket launches. They have since been used both to track the rocket flight for malfunctions, and on board rockets, to show various stages more clearly. They are also used to cover the launch when personal viewing is undesirable. Later uses Security Cameras were later used in many chemical plants to film and record processes which it is unsuitable for people to watch due to risk of contamination. Closed-circuit security cameras are today most frequently used to deter criminals whether in the home or in public places. CCTV was developed partly in response to IRA bombings in the United Kingdom. There were many trial security camera programmes using CCTV in the 70s and 80s. As the public and government became aware of the success of these programmes, the Home Office lent support to matters in the nineties. Today, systems cover most town and city centres, as well as a large number of stations, car-parks and estates. Estimates have the number of cameras in London at 400,000 and the number nationwide at 4 million. It seems clear that the prudent use of security cameras combined with warnings is useful in preventing crime and vandalism, or at the very least in apprehending the culprits. Security camera evidence has now been used ina number of serious and violent crimes to bring the perpetrators to justice. In particular, it has been useful in crimes committed in public places. After the bombings of London on 7 July 2005, CCTV footage was used to identify the bombers. The media was surprised that few tube trains actually had CCTV cameras, and there were some calls for this to be increased. CCTV security cams are also used for monitoring where it may be necessary to watch a process such as people descending an escalator, in case of dangerous behaviour. With a variety of both domestic and public uses, security cameras will be part of all our lives for the forseeable future.
