What is Digital CCTV?

Digital CCTV, or Digital Closed Circuit Television, is the technology rapidly replacing traditional VCR. In the old VCR system, CCTV pictures are sent via the CCTV camera to a closed area, e.g. a CCTV Monitor. This type of CCTV is likely to produce lower resolution images and to rely on unsightly and inconvenient cabling.. Modern Digital CCTV Systems can be operated remotely using a laptop or mobile, can cover various locations, and be viewed from anywhere providing internet access or a mobile signal is present.

Advantages of Digital CCTV

The benefits of using a digital system, is that it uses a smaller quantity of equipment and the user does not have to keep changing video tapes as everything is automated. These systems can record video images on the HDD or onto a remote computer - this latter has both capacity and security advantages. A digital system means the database can be searched by camera, time, date, alarm-activation or motion. This saves the user much time.

In addition images are more focused and detailed and can be repeatedly viewed without loss of quality.

So the basic advantages are:

  • Less storage space required
  • Archiving is possible
  • Data More Easily Accessed
  • Higher image quality
  • No Tapes
  • Less affected by noise -
  • Transmit and retrieve stored data
  • Less Obsolescence
  • No Routine Maintenance Required

Digital CCTV

Most CCTV systems are now using DigitalCCTV Surveillance. Mages are digitised and compressed so that they can be shown on a PC. The high resaolutionimages are stored on a hard drive.

There are two types of Digital Surveillance Systems:

Digital Video Recorders look similar to Video Recorders and can save images to a PC

In this system, CCTV Cameras are connected to the back of the unit via standard CCTV Camera connection. You can also connect a CCTV monitor or TV to the DVR to play back images.

Some DVR's only record when someone is moving in front of the camera.

PC Based Digital Video Surveillance

PC Based Digital CCTV Surveillance systems are quite a new technology in the CCTV Industry. This type of Digital CCTV system works by allowing you to view your images, search through previously recorded footage, and back up footage to CD/DVD either on the PC system or remotely.

All in all the digital systems available on the market today are at the cutting edge of known technology and are the way to go if you don't want to be thinking of purchasing a new system 5 years down the line.
