Llanfyllin Stud, specialising in Welsh Cobs, is set in a gorgeous location on the Wales Shropshire borders in Powys approximately 12 miles from the historic market town of Oswestry, Shropshire, 10 miles from Welshpool, 3 miles from Llanfyllin and five miles from Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa. The area boasts some of the most beautiful, panoramic scenery in Mid-Wales.

The Stud started breeding Section D Welsh Cobs in 1980 and many of the foals we have bred here have gone on to do extremely well in the show ring, in hand and as performance horses both here and abroad.

Our mares are all over 14.2 hands and have plenty of substance and bone and carry the excellent bloodlines of Llanarth, Mathrafal and Brenin Gwalia.

Our aim is to continue producing foals of quality, size and substance with extravagant action and wonderful temperament. Our breeding is very well sought after both when offered privately and at the biannual Welsh Cob & Pony Society sales at Builth Wells, Powys.

Please find more information about Welsh cobs and Welsh Mountain Ponies below.

Welsh Mountain Pony (Section A)
Height: not more than 12 hands

The Welsh Mountain Pony has developed over centuries of harsh conditions. This has meant that the breed today possesses a sound constitution, powerful limbs and great intelligence. This combines combined with the much-acclaimed Welsh temperament, to make the ideal children's pony. Welsh mountain ponies thrive in both hot heat and cooler climes.

Welsh Pony (Section B)
Height: not more than 13.2 hands

The Welsh Pony shares many of the attributes of the Welsh Mountain Pony although as such it excels particularly in riding pony qualities.

Welsh Ponies served the hill farmers of this region as their only way of transporting themselves across very rugged terrain and hilly regions. Their sturdy and tough nature and speed is the result of such selection. Their temperament and excellent jumping performances make them an attractive proposition for the young rider, and they acquit themselves well in both performance competition and the show ring.

Welsh Cobs

Welsh Pony of Cob Type (Section C)
Height: not more than 13.2hands (Wales); 14.2 hands (US)

Welsh Pony Cob (Section D)
Height: exceeding 13.2hands

The Welsh Pony of Cob Type has many characteristics of the Welsh Pony, but tends to be stronger, with Cob blood. they have become much more popular in recent years, through a recognition of their versatility and thus their true worth.

Ideal for adults and children alike, they, too are excellent jumpers and also respond well to the harness. They are in fact adaptable to most uses.

The general character of the Welsh Cob is one of power, resilience and agility. The head shows great quality with Pony character. Bold prominent eyes, a broad forehead and neat, well set ears. The body must be deep, on strong limbs with good "hard wearing" joints and an abundance of flat bone. Action must be straight, free and forceful, the knees should be bent and then the whole foreleg extended from the shoulders and as far forward as possible in all paces, with the hocks well flexed, producing powerful leverage.

The Welsh Cob is a good hunter and a most competent performer in all competitive sports, in recent years they have had great success in the International driving world. Their abilities in all spheres are now fully recognized throughout the world.

The History of the Welsh Pony

The original home of the Welsh Mountain Pony was in the hills and valleys of Wales. That they were able to survive under these harsh conditions is a testament to their endurance. They even escaped an edict of Henry VIII that all horses under 15 hands should be destroyed.

That the Welsh pony carries a trace of Arabian blood seems beyond doubtand it is indicative of their modern day popularity that today, over 34,000 Welsh ponies have been registered in America.
